Classical Music Pre-Concert Observation (cmPCO)
Classical Music Pre-Concert Observation is a concert quality forecast and rating system initiated and launched in February 2008 by Mr Rudolph Tang, former editor of Gramophone magazine Chinese edition, jury member of MIDEM Classical Awards 2008 and a prominent music critic in China. While understanding and honouring the unpredictable nature of classical music performing, the cmPCO attempts to regulate the performing market in China by giving theatergoers professional guidelines when selecting a classical music concert. cmPCO rates upcoming performances by visiting orchestras and musicians.

The rating system arises after some third-class or pick-up Western orchestras and bands tour China with a misleading, but often respectable Chinese name, an exaggerated introduction and costly tickets, especially during the Christmas season and Chinese New Year. They exploit the Chinese audience’s lack of English-language skills and background in music.

As a counteract against the phenomenon the cmPCO gives forcast and rating on a monthly basis. The core of cmPCO consists of eight prominent yet independent music experts and journalists from the Greater China Area, of pronounced age span and notable geographical range. There are Mr Rudolph Tang, Mr Shaolu Ni, Mr Darren Lin, Mr Elman Lee, Mr Cinong Shen, Mr Xinming Pan, Mr Enhui Liu and Ms Charlene Lim.

Since then cmPCO has attracted considerable media attention, widely covered by nearly all major news agencies and newspaper in China. It also stirs groundbreaking debate in the performing arts sector in China regarding quality control over visiting artists and ensembles.
